It might be helpful to put down a layer of gesso before you paint so that the wood does not absorb the paint so much.

Thank you Katy. This video is inspiring and generous! And the portrait and sunset are particularly beautiful! Painting with coffee?! Great idea, there is always a cold cup of coffee around! As a newer artist, there is one aspect I disagree with. I have copied several Van Gogh's, with The Starry Night being my favorite, and I even teach that in a 2 hour class. For newer artists, copying can teach brush work, how to use paint, and many other techniques that will start beginners or newer painters on their way with a little guidance. Yes, later, after those skills are acquired, it IS important to create our own work, just as you say. Thank you again! Lauren, Arty Party of Westchester

A beautiful little painting but it was quite stressful for a beginner trying to follow and understand the process (how to successfully mix colours for example and create the general shapes). There seemed to be absolutely no time to get a handle on it. The colours of the paints tended to come out quite differently, too. Frustrated, I found I had to step away. If the video was 3/4 of an hour in length (not 3 hours, of course), I would have felt more supported. That is what a good teacher does!

I hope you answer my question, how do you get that background effect on your gorgeous painting? I hate plain smooth background. I like the more roughy texture background. I would love if you can tell me or make a video about how you achieve that beautiful background on your paintings

Hi Katie. I just had a go at your peonies and it wasn’t a great result. I have brushes that my kids used at school for GCSE ( many years ago) so i wonder if maybe they’re not the best . I did buy the paint colours you suggest but I got Daler Rowney graduate and the colours are vastly different from yours. Again, should I invest in Golden paints? Or another brand. I’m happy to get the best to achieve the right result. What would you recommend?

The timing tip helped me. Until you said it I had never thought of timing myself.

Those moments are devastating. They always happen when you are in the zone and they break your entire train of thought. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Up until now I've largely focused on realism, borderline hyper-realism, so these tips are a huge help. I'll probably add one more tip for those like me. Watch a couple of useful videos like this one, but then get on with it and start practicing. I've often been too caught up in getting every possible tip before starting, that I never get started before the day is actually over.
